Human Terrain Seeking to understand 'why they hate us', the US military adopts a new strategy of cultural awareness to win over the hearts and minds of the Iraqi and Afghan people. Controversy erupts when academics embed with combat troops and the war comes home to the university.

Professor Dr. James Der Derian is research professor at the Watson Institute for International Studies at Brown University (USA) (link). He has been a visiting scholar at MIT, Harvard, Oxford, and Princeton. His research focus is on global security and media studies. Professor Der Derian is author and editor of several seminal works in this field, for example "Virtuous War: Mapping the Military-Industrial-Media-Entertainment Network" (2009), "Critical Practices in International Theory" (2009) and "Sustainable Diplomacies" (2010). Furthermore, he has become known as a producer of film documentaries such as "Virtual Y2K", "After 9/11" and most recently "Human Terrain".
